Clayco + SCAD Hard Hat Innovation
A group of twelve SCAD students, from multiple majors and more than five different countries, collaborated with Clayco Construction Company to research and develop concepts for new construction hard hat products for on-site construction employees. Clayco is a pioneer in creating the latest industry jobsite safety standards. That is why Clayco reached out to SCAD to collaborate on leading innovation in the creation of the new hard hat. The furthering of hard hat efficiency is one of the key components to creating a safer work environment overall.

Process Book
The Process Book was my major contribution to the final presentation. It is the final showcase of all the work our team had accomplished over the 10-week time period.
The Clayco + SCAD design team is a combination of students from five different countries studying a variety of four different majors and minors.
Within the team, the student’s major studies include Design Management, Equestrian Study, Graphic Design, and Industrial Design. The variety of our team’s skill sets allowed us to derive multiple design approaches to invent original, complex, and cutting-edge ideas.
The project began with understanding the people at Clayco construction sites
We went to a live construction site in Atlanta to conduct a workshop to understand the experience those are having who wear a hard hat for sometimes 9 hours a day. We wanted to engage in conversation with them to gain insights to their feelings towards their current hard hat experience. It was important for me to listen to all the different kinds of construction workers and recognize patterns within the research.
Primary research conducted at a construction site in Atlanta Georgia
While conducting primary research we held interview sessions with on-site construction employees from all industries within the job-site. We also gave out surveys and used a small scale cultural probe to reach a wider audience in a visual way.
Client Presentations
During client presentations I would create all of the graphics for the screen which displayed our research findings, survey data, and process work. I would also present a fair amount of the information to our clients.
Final Output: Process Book
In the final presentation to Clayco representatives, our team showcased the three ultimate hard hat designs. The process book significantly stood out, offering a comprehensive insight into our design thinking strategies and methodologies.
